Dunlap High School senior killed in head-on crash in Peoria

A Dunlap High School senior was killed late Saturday night when her vehicle was involved in a head-on collision near the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in northwest Peoria.

Nevaeh Mitchell, 18, of Princeville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 8400 block of North Orange Prairie Road at 12:27 a.m. Sunday. According to the Peoria County Coroner's Office, Mitchell had been driving north along Orange Prairie Road when her vehicle collided with one traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Law enforcement was called to the scene at 11:39 p.m., with the Peoria police and fire departments, along with emergency medical services, being dispatched. Upon arrival, they found Mitchell's body and declared her deceased.

The driver of the second vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Peoria Police Department is investigating what led to the crash, with the traffic and patrol units leading the inquiry. No arrests have been made at this time.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
