Robert D. Smith, 87, of Washington passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Bob was born on February 9, 1937, in Metamora, IL, a son of Ralph and Blanche (Boyer) Smith. He married Catherine Taylor on February 16, 1957, in Peoria, and she survives.
He is also survived by his children, Steven Smith, Kim (Norbert) Bendixen, Kelly Ruder and Krista Cooper, all of Washington, and Kara (Carrie) Smith of Peoria; grandchildren, Ashley, Cassy (Ryan), Chevie (Levi), Taylor (Jake), Kiley, David and Heidi (Paul); and great-grandchildren, Pierce, Colby, Kitner, Maylee, Mac, Jack, James, Aaliyah and Chance.
Bob was a farmer and an over-the-road livestock hauler. As the co-founder of the Gym Corner, Bob played many roles in its success. His hobbies included cooking, hunting, riding his horse and watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting activities. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and Illini fan. His family is most proud of him for the love he generously gave his family and the way he fought until the end.
Bob was a longtime member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in El Paso, IL.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be at 5 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2024, at Connect Church in Washington, with Pastor David Jane officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Private family inurnment will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the American Red Cross.
